Inland waterway shipping is the most environmentally friendly way of getting goods around Europe. Every vessel that moves along our waterways substitutes up to 200 lorries on the highways, reducing traffic, noise pollution, and emissions. With reduced fuel consumed per ton transported per kilometre, inland transport generates significantly less CO₂ than road haulage or rail, so it is leading the way for Europe's transition to cleaner logistics.
The efficiency of inland barges lies in their size: one barge can carry the same quantity of freight as hundreds of trucks with a lot less energy. Not only does this conserve greenhouse gases, but it conserves infrastructure as well by not having as many trucks and therefore less roadwear.
